Gym Etiquette

Whether at home or at the gym there are some unspoken rules that help keep the environment clean and safe for everyone.
  1. Wear the proper apparel. Those cute little pants and sports bra may make you feel so adorable but it is distracting for other people. It can lead to other being self conscious and in the end not come back to the gym because of all the meat heads in the gym. (It is very common for people to feel intimidated by other stronger or leaner members and end their goal early.) It may also be dangerous for you to wear the wrong cloths. Do not wear the Shape-up shoes or other shoes similar. They lack the balance one needs to ensure they don't topple over. Also, make sure the shoes are closed toed! A weight on the foot is VERY painful. Overly loose cloths can snag so keep to a sweater or a t-shirt when lifting.
  2. Wipe down equipment when done. You may not think that you sweated that much but the sweat streak down your back says otherwise. It helps keep germs from spreading and makes clean up for the night crew much more enjoyable.
  3. Wash your hands! Whether it is after the toilet or after you are done lifting, wash them. It is for your safety and for the others who will contact that same surface.
  4. Rack the weights. Even if you found them on the ground you should still put them up when you are done. Some meat heads don't have the brain capacity to understand that it is dangerous to leave those weights for someone to trip on.
  5. Be aware. If someone is using a piece of equipment you need just wait until they are completely done. Luckily at a gym they have tons of equipment for you to use besides that one dumbbell.
  6. If you can see someone is lifting a ton of weight offer to spot them. It is not really a necessary thing and some feel very uncomfortable doing it. It is dangerous to them and the last thing you want to see is someone dropping 150 lbs of metal on their chest. Plus, you may find you can make new friends this way.
  7. Wear sandles in the shower. Prevents athletes foot and other nasties from spreading.
Most importantly, have fun while you are there. The unspoken rules are only to keep everyone safe and happy.
