Portion Control

As our "eyes" have gotten bigger, our bellies have followed.
  • A primary reason Americans are getting fatter is our outsized view of a single serving of food
  • Obesity is responsible for about 300,000 deaths a year, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association.
  • Super-sized foods help create super-sized people
  • Most Americans grossly overestimate a normal serving size.
  • Particularly treacherous: giant servings in restaurants. You ca get more than a whole day's calories in just one serving of some fast foods. One example: Steakhouses commonly serve cheese fries (French fries coated with cheese and ranch dressing) in a 4-cup servingt that provides 3,000 calories, two thirds o them from fat
  • The more you eat out, the more calories you eat and the fatter you get
  • No, a serving of cereal isn't whatever fits in yoru big cereal bowl. It's 1 ounce--about the size of a tennis ball or hockey puck, Feast your eyes on the surprisingly small official serving sized:
    • Tennis ball = 1 serving of fruit or vegetalbes
    • 2 cassette tapes = 2 servings of bread (so relatively one slice)
    • Computer mouse = 1 medium potatoe
    • Deck of cards = 1 serving meat, chicken, or fish
    • Hockey puck = 1 serving pasta, rice, cereal
    • Four dice = 1 serving of cheese (1 ounce)
