Everyone raves on how healthy fish is for you. That is a fact. It is extremely healthy. It has very healthy fats and oils, high in protein, is low is cholesterol, and is high in iron.1 There is a debate on whether the risk of eating fish is good for you considering some of the risk such as mercury poisoning, PCBs and dioxins. A study performed by Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) concluded that the benefits of eating fish far outweigh those risk.2 This includes pregnant women. There is little to concern yourself about the mercury poisoning in fish. Simply avoid the fish with the most amount of mercury (e.g., shark, swordfish, king mackerel or tilefish). It is recommended that you eat one serving (3.5 oz) of fish at least twice a week to reap the benefits of the fish. But there is more to than just the benefits. What about money, availability, and those who do not like fish.
When you live in-land, like myself, fish can become very expensive and not as delicious. Here are some hints as to where you can get your fish and alternatives that are less expensive and just as beneficial. There are other sources that "still can be beneficial, such as flax seed oil and
walnuts. In addition, food manufacturers have come up with many new
products recently with omega-3 added, including eggs high in omega-3,
fortified orange juice, fortified margarine and fortified pasta."3 You can also get the Omega-3 from supplements.
You can also get fish frozen. Many of the nutrients are lost this way, but it is a small fraction. Plus they can stay frozen for extended periods of time.
There are fish farms everywhere. It is a great family activity and you get fresh fish straight from the butcher. Check out your nearest fish farm and go fishing with your family.
