It is really hard to be on the road and eat right. I am going to Portland for the second time this month and thought really hard what I could do to make the trip better on my stomach. Here are some of my tips on how to enjoy the car ride and not be sick of potato chips by the end.
- Pre-think what you will eat
- By choosing what you will not eat/will eat before hand you can eliminate so many bad choices
- Sandwiches can be travel worthy
- Sandwiches can be bought at the store in travel friendly containers. Just stick them in a cooler and go.
- Bring a cooler
- Since you want to bring things that are not able to spoil, bring the cooler to keep those cheese sticks fresh. (advice, don't put a bag of ice in the cooler. Try a couple of ice packs instead so your food isn't floating in the back stinking up the place.)
- Avoid storing non fridge fruit in the cooler
- This is more of a personal thing. I have had the misfortune to have a banana stored in the cooler. It ruined all of the food.
- Eat things that will spoil first
- Such as bananas, apples, cheeses, and such things
- Choose juice over pop
- Make sure it is 100% juice. It should say at the top of the nutrition label how much juice in is it.
- Get healthy nonperishable
- Whole grain crackers over chips, string cheese or baby bells over squeeze cheese (nonperishable as long as they are in your cooler), and raw vegetables or fruits from travel friendly containers
- Eat big meals
- rather than snacking all the time stop for a big meal. If you don't have time to stop than bring something that will fill you up such as sandwiches, parfaits, granola bars, fruit drinks (such as naked), or something else whole grain.
Enjoy your travels without a stomach ache or a head ache from the nasty smell coming from the back seat.
