Supplements

This is a very delicate subject with some. I have learned that it is honestly not that hard. Supplements are there to give you the nutrients that you are missing. No matter where you live and what you eat you will always be missing a little of something. Sometimes it is hard to get all your vegetables in, sometimes it is impossible to eat all the fish to gain all your Omega-3. Supplements are there to fill that void.
Here are my tips pertaining to supplements.
  • Don 't go cheap
    • Honestly the cheap ones are the not worth the money. They are weak and only do the smallest amount possible. I prefer Douglas Labs sold by Life Time Fitness. I honestly have noticed a change in the way I feel and perform as compared to using the Equate multivitamins. There is only a 20 dollar difference but if you account for the number of pills in each bottle the difference per pill is only about 15 cents (rough estimate) and it really has a huge difference in the amount of nutrients your body is getting and how much you body is able absorbs. (See Life Time Fitness for more details and discounts or contact me for a discounted consultation with their highly qualified nutritionist.)
  • Go with the basics
    • I recommend a multivitamin, Omega-3 (especially in non-shore areas), Probiotics, and Whey Protein. According to NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) someone who is heavily training will require more protein (only about 1-2g/kg) and someone who is not training will only require .8g/kg. One scoop of APS Complete Grass Fed Whey Protein from Douglas Labs provides 130 calories, 23 grams of protein, 3 grams of carbohydrate, 2 grams of fat. Me being a person of 165 lbs (about 75 kg) and performing heavy training I need 135 grams of protein in order to maintain my muscle build.
  • Do your own research!
    • Know the benefits of each supplements. Multivitamin fills the holes in your diet. Omega-3 helps joints and has been proven to reduce heart problems and other chronic issues. Probiotics helps build a stronger GI tract and helps build a stronger immune system (considering most of your GI tract is incorporated with the immune system.) and Whey Protein is healthy and lean way to gain those extra calories to build muscle rather than destroy it.
  • Be Consistent
    • Forget one day, get back on the horse the next. Make it worth it by taking them every day. It will change your life!
